STEEL DYNAMICS INC. ORDERS THREE COATING MASS CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR ITS INDIANA HOT-DIP GALVANIZING LINES
Steel Dynamics Inc. has placed an order with Industrial Automation Services (IAS) to design, supply and commission three zinc coating mass control systems (). Two systems will be delivered to the Butler Indiana plant and the third to the Jeffersonville plant. Engineering for the three systems will be executed in parallel with commissioning of the Butler systems occurring first.

For control of the zinc coating, IAS will install the system, which utilizes a proven physics-based coating mass model to generate accurate references and control the knife to strip distances and stripping gas pressure. During order transitions, advanced signal processing algorithms enable the controls to estimate coating thickness during order transitions within one coating gauge scan. Resulting control actions minimize the generation of out-ofspec material and the minimized coating standard deviation allows for zinc savings and a typical return on investment within a few months.

The open architecture control system incorporates IAS's easy to maintain graphical programming interface, and takes advantage of IAS's considerable process know-how and local support. The new control system will operate in concert with existing Sentek coating gauges to provide improved strip coating performance.

IAS will execute engineering design, project management, installation assistance, commissioning and operator/maintenance training from IAS's offices in Pittsburgh, PA., USA and Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

IAS RECEIVES ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARD.
IAS has won the "2004 National Project Excellence Award in Automation, Control and Instrumentation" from the Institute of Engineers Australia. The award was conferred for the Advanced Hot Finishing Mill Project at BlueScope Steel's Westernport Works. The award is presented biennially to Australian companies that promote better engineering and achieve cost effective, commercially viable projects which benefit the economy.

In October 2004, IAS achieved final acceptance for the mill setup technology upgrade for the 2050mm five stand hot strip finishing mill at BlueScope Steel Limited Western Port, Victoria, Australia.

The Advanced Hot Finishing Mill provides significantly improved mill performance capability via the application of a robust setup strategy for calculating processing speeds, interstand tensions and stand thickness reductions and sophisticated physical based adaptive models for all major process parameters. The on-line mathematical models needed to perform this function involves the solution of hundreds of non-linear algebraic and differential equations and are among the most demanding automation tasks in a steel plant.

The setup models were developed as a joint effort between IAS and BlueScope Steel Limited staff with the latter providing the yield stress, temperature and friction models. The system also includes an adaptive threading function which modifies downstream stand references on threading as material hardness and thickness disturbances are detected in the earlier stands, to provide improved thickness performance.
